CONSORTS OF THE SPIRITS
This is a work in my series titled Consorts of the Spirits and was inspired by a phrase from the writing of Ntozake Shange:
"Where there is a woman there is magic. If there is a moon falling from her mouth, she is a woman who knows her magic, who can share or not share her powers. A woman with a moon falling from her mouth, roses between her legs and tiaras of Spanish moss, this woman is a consort of the spirits."
Finishing Consorts of the Spirits this spring at the two-year mark from when the globe first shut down — and during the week of Earth Day 2022 — was important to me.
In my art (words and visual) I try to alchemize trauma into triumph, turn something ugly into something beautiful. For these, I’ve used upcycled upholstery samples from a woman-owned business that had to close due to the pandemic.
