The Artist

Akwi Nji (b. 1979) is a United States-based artist whose abstract paintings function as color fields of maps, thresholds, throughlines, or transmissions.

She paints visual poetry through loose, gestural, and exaggerated calligraphic strokes. Themes of connection and communication are laced throughout these paintings which operate as immersive portals -- guiding a way through.

Equally prevalent in her work are themes of geography and a search for place, belonging, and a sense of home -- including within the self. She's interested in how human connection is constructed, transmitted, fractured, and rediscovered across time, culture, and space.

Her contemporary paintings are imagined landscapes of our earth and bodies. She is inspired by nature, the cosmos, and ancestral connection.
